VALE Phyllis Avery

Director Hunter Valley Football

01.12.1942 to 17.03.2019

On Sunday 17 March 2019, we lost a stalwart of the game and the matriarch of Hunter Valley Football. Our condolences to Phyllis’ family, friends and football colleagues.

Phyllis will always be remembered for her welcoming manner, her smiling face and of course her cheekiness and her laugh.

For 43 years, Phyllis dedicated her time to a game and a community she loved.

In 1979, Phyllis was elected Secretary of Hunter District Junior Soccer Association (now known as Hunter Valley Football – HVF) and Life Membership was bestowed upon her in 1986. Her involvement with the Association continued until her parting.

Phyllis’ involvement with Hunter Valley Football varied over her 40 years, from secretary, registrar and undertaking fixtures duties. Known for her attention to detail, Phyllis was a master of fixtures, her inscrutable eye ensured each competition season was run efficiently.

Whilst Phyllis will be missed for the great work she did, it will be the undeniable loyalty she provided to Hunter Valley Football and its clubs that will forever be remembered.

A true ambassador to volunteers in clubs, Phyllis lead the way in establishing good governance, procedures and that consistent administration was adhered to through her strong relationships and ongoing training for clubs.

Based on respect, these relationships with club volunteers created a reliable and friendly environment and resulted in all issues being resolved quickly and efficiently.

Always willing to give her time to assist, Phyllis never slowed down or looked to retire from football, her philosophy of ‘getting things done and assisting clubs’ will be a hard act to follow.

Good-bye Phyllis, a leader, a mentor and forever a friend of football.

A funeral service for Phyllis will be held:

2.00pm Friday 22 March 2019 at St John’s Anglican Church, Westcott Street, Cessnock
