NNSWF put new referees on the fast track for 2022

November 22nd, 2021

Northern NSW Football will conduct a Level 4 Referee Course to fast track the recruitment of more adults to become match officials in 2022.

The course will be held over two sessions on Tuesday 7 and Wednesday 8 December from 6pm to 9pm.

The course will be aimed at people over 16-years-old who have experience in the game and are looking to become a match official. Ideal candidates include retired or current players and coaches who would like to be involved in a different side of the game and former referees who want to re-activate their accreditation and return to officiating.

While football continues to be the region’s, as well as the world’s, largest sport, the number of referees have not kept pace with the number required for the large number of clubs playing football locally.

This includes the Zone Football League competitions administered by Newcastle Football, Hunter Valley Football and Macquarie Football.

So in order to try and secure some desperately needed referees for the 2022 Zone Football League competitions, Northern NSW Football will conduct the fast-tracked Level 4 Referee Course.

NNSWF Referee Manager Brad Carlin said there was a pathway available for new match officials who completed the course.

“Participants in the fast-track course who want to continue their involvement with a club and also referee can do so. For example, they can continue to play for their clubs on one day of the weekend and officiate on the other,” Carlin said.

“There may also be opportunities to be appointed to mid-week fixtures.

“Participants who complete the course will initially officiate on Zone Football League matches as a referee and an assistant referee.

“But the pathway to officiating National Premier League Men, National Premier League Women and HIT106.9 Northern League One competitions exists for those who wish to further their refereeing career.”
