An open letter from FFA Chief Executive James Johnson to the Northern NSW Football community

June 10th, 2020

It is a privilege to write on behalf of Football Federation Australia (FFA) to the vast football community throughout Northern NSW during this challenging time for our nation and sport.

I am pleased to hear from the Chair, Helene O’Neill and CEO, David Eland that clubs have responded positively to the challenges presented by COVID–19, and remain committed to providing opportunities for people in their communities to enjoy our game and reconnect following prolonged isolation.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to the whole football community for its magnificent response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Your actions, and adherence to the government’s social distancing regulations, have paved the way for the return to football we now see, and one which is being achieved in a safe and responsible manner.

Our volunteers are the lifeblood of football in Australia and play a vital role in the operation of our football clubs and the delivery of our game. FFA understands that the suspension of football, and now the demands associated with the resumption of training ahead of playing in July, have been extremely challenging for our volunteer workforce whose numbers have been significantly impacted because of COVID-19.

As we have always done when facing great adversity, we must rally behind our game and come together to help our sport get back onto its feet. I would strongly encourage you to offer your time to support your local football club to help meet the increased demands associated with hosting football during these challenging times.

For parents of players, the assistance required could be as simple as communicating with other parents, encouraging social distancing, setting and packing up fields, directing people and encouraging good hygiene.

A long-term commitment would be great, but that is not the priority in the short-term as clubs desperately need more volunteers on a week-by-week basis to meet the increasing demands imposed by the Public Health Order.

Football will play a vital role in getting our country back on its feet. No other sport can provide the economic, physical and mental health benefits, the social cohesion and opportunities for inclusion for such a diverse community that football can.

Our game and your local club need support from its community. If you can volunteer your time, please contact your club as a matter of urgency.

Thank you, stay safe and above all, enjoy your football.

James Johnson
